‘The New Celts’ album is more than just a sound - it features some of the people and the songs God is raising up on a small island situated in the north Atlantic Ocean called Ireland. Featuring Robin Mark, Brian Houston, Joanne Hogg and introducing Andy Rogers, this album displays an array of musical colours, that although diverse in style, all encapsulate the burning, passionate heart of The Celt.

Songs:
  1.  I have come to realise - Andy Rogers
  2.  A humble heart You have yet to despise (Won’t let go) - Brian Houston
  3.  Holy holy - Robin Mark
  4.  Oh Lord when I wake up in the morning (Lift high) - Brian Houston
  5.  Lord You are my righteousness - Andy Rogers
  6.  I wonder as I wander - Joanne Hogg
  7.  Your whisper - Brian Houston
  8.  Take us to the river - Robin Mark
  9.  It is written in the Word - Andy Rogers
10.  My hope is in the Lord - Robin Mark
11.  The Lord’s my Shepherd - Joanne Hogg

"The New Celts"

The renaissance of all things Celtic in the past decade or so has resulted in much debate among Christians as to just how orthodox were the beliefs and practises of the early Celts, how reliable are the accounts handed down regarding them, and just how much the Church can learn from them, well over a thousand years after their influence in Europe began to wane. Whatever the answers to these questions, renewed interest in Celtic spirituality is strong, as is well reflected in the rise of 'Celtic' music in both Christian and secular spheres.
This album draws on the talents of musicians from one geographic sector of Celtic influence - that of Ireland - and displays songs from the recordings of several well-known artists (Robin Mark, Brian Houston and Iona's Joanne Hogg need little introduction here), as well as three from relative newcomer Andy Rogers. Andy is a great songwriter - his soft worship tones are also a compliment here to Mark's gentle offerings, and a perfect antidote to Houston's raw, rootsy sound - while Joanne's vocals are, as always, ethereal and sublime.
Whatever the true meaning, musically speaking, of the term, this album truly carries a 'Celtic' feel. More importantly, it's simply a terrific collection of worship tunes! God is raising many musicians in Ireland to help unite His people in love and praise - let's share with them in spirit and in song.

WE SAY YES

Andy Rogers website

Andy Rogers, a member of the Causeway Coast Vineyard, is the latest to emerge in a growing number of talented Christian singer / songwriters from Northern Ireland. Several of his songs already appear (very impressively) on the recent "New Celts" collection - Goldusa have gone one step further in rooting out this little-known solo disc, an independent offering containing nine original worship-tracks. Simply recorded, with gentle guitar, drum and vocal accompaniment, this is very much an acoustic set, ably bringing out the warmth of Andy's tenderly-rootsy voice. Couple of my favourites are the opening declaration 'We say yes', the catchy but unusually-titled 'Every molecule' (recorded elsewhere by UK's Geraldine Latty) and 'Who am I' with it's intro' harmonica vibes.
Those attracted to his "New Celts" performance may be disappointed with the weaker production of these arrangements - also by the absence of printed lyrics. Nevertheless, the busy itinerary of this promising songsmith is set to get even busier - as more in the Church get acquainted with his obvious musical gifting.

"Desperate"

Houston-based Among Thorns have been immensely active since the release of their self-titled debut album in 1999. One of America's busiest touring bands, this tirelessly devoted six-some have drawn literally thousands of high school / college students into an atmosphere of focused worship, building up a strong support base as they go.
Such popularity is hardly surprising given a listen to "Desperate" - for when these guys declare the praises of God (and they do so relentlessly), they do it with consuming style! Bolting in with a surge of rock praise, 'No rock' has a certain Third Day feel while the searing 'Jesus Christ' is an edgy proclamation of faith bordering on the 'heavy'! Elsewhere, and with very much their own sound, flows some melodic pop-rock (e.g. the infectious 'Take my hand'), followed by a series of chilled and highly sensitive cuts where the focus is personal and the atmosphere intense. The methodical shuffle 'Desperate and the acoustic yearning of 'Come Holy Spirit' are tunes in point, as too is the simple doxology 'Forever' (with wonderful string arrangements) - each song being deeply worshipful.
Aided by Jason Harrison's powerful lead vocals, this set of new and self-penned tunes builds ably on the strengths of it's predecessor. From guitar-driven rock to intimate ballads - "Desperate" truly does the business!

"Visit This Vine"

Amidst the stresses and strains of a busy life, it's great to find some time to relax to music which is not only beautiful and gently soothing, but which also allows one's thoughts to be directed heavenwards. Jon and Eva Salsbury are part of Restoration Temple, Lima, Ohio, from whence comes this inspiring ten-song collection.
'My desire is to write songs that can easily be sung and cause the one singing them to focus more on Jesus than on the song' relates Jon, reflecting the paramount motive of any true worship-song writer. Certainly these tunes are deeply worshipful, both lyrically and in their prevalent atmosphere of adoration. Unlike most worship material these days, many of these pieces contain several distinct verses plus chorus. There's musical diversity too, with the inclusion of some light pop-funk (the opening title-track), a bit of gospel-soul (care of the gifted 15-piece choir), and, definitely the weakest cut on offer, the rather 'twee' country-pop bounce of 'Join the dance'. Throughout, the couples' voices intertwine in beautiful
harmony - Jon doing lead vocals on most tracks, also providing most of the keyboard work.
Overall, the great strength of this album is the wonderful flow of worship created and sustained - this climaxing in several profound and intimate expressions towards the close. As an independent debut "Visit This Vine" is commendable; but in it's own right it's a truly lovely album - far too good to miss out on!
