ONE NATION
from Grapevine 2001

Recorded live at the Grapevine 2001 celebration in Lincolnshire, U.K.
Worship leaders:  Chris Bowater, Paul Simpson-Parry, Dave Middleton, Karen Smith, Godfrey Birtill, Joanna Holland

Grapevine's live recordings have long been among my favourite of annual UK summer output. The obvious sense of passion effused, along with the worshipful reality of warm, flowing songs, ever combine to produce a most absorbing experience, and, cliché excused, One Nation has gotta be the best one yet!

Unity in diversity' is again in order, with one or two fairly unfamiliar (at least to many of us) worship names leading on some tracks (e.g. Karen Smith) along with other seasoned musicians. Variety in song-writing too; apart from Godfrey Birtill's intriguing (out of place?) trio, each other of these 15 tunes has a different writer to it's credit, resulting in a blessed mix of new, home-composed and recent, borrowed tunes. Hard to pick out favourites as virtually all songs work well, but I do love the celebration charm of 'You are the Holy One', the thoughtful dedication of the piano-based 'Your name' , and the adorational sensitivity of 'To worship You'. Another special moment follows Chris Bowater's tender rendition of a Redman song, when Carla Hayles breaks forth into one of the most 'anointed' spontaneous songs I have heard in a while.

The unity of focused worship is apparent throughout this wonderful 74 minute set, all brought together under the production skills of Daniel Bowater. Such unity is suggested by the album title, and shared on the gentle Caribbean tones of 'One love' (which I confess reminds me slightly of Bob Marley's reggae song of same name!); -

'Many people of many nations / Are gathered before the Lord / A royal priesthood holy witness / A choir of hearts and voices / In harmony sing praise to God'.

Many voices, many sounds -
One Nation, one great album!

EVERY PART OF ME
by Resurrection Life Church
Grandville, Michigan
worship leaders Michael & Lisa Gungor
www.reslife.org

When Michael Gungor, worship leader at Granville, Michigan's Resurrection Life Church, describes this album as 'by far the best' one he has worked on, it is no vain or whimsical comment. For Every Part of Me is truly miles ahead of the preceding Selah (itself a fine work), and in my opinion ranks as the most formidable independent church-worship CD I've had the privilege of hearing in at least the last twelve months (and I've heard many!), maybe longer.

Quality oozes from this disc to such extent that it comes as little surprise to know the project was nine months and literally hundreds of hours in the making! Gungor wrote/co-wrote all 14 songs, save for a choice, self-lowering Darrell Evans cut (excellently performed), and Mike, along with wife Lisa, are the main worship leaders throughout. Set opens with some delightful pop-rock/funk numbers that are outrageously winsome from the very start! There follows a select train of gentler songs whose words and melody aid you sink deep in His encompassing Love and lose yourself in adoration. Amidst such heavenly flow appear hints of jazz, while a couple of savoury soul cuts aptly bring the silky vocal tones of Candace Martin and Ken Reynolds to lead mike; pursued closely by two fun & funky salsa rhythms that rejoice unashamedly in God's bounteous grace! A well-honed brass section underlies these Latino takes, while Bruce Vanderveen's tasty sax solos embellish various other tracks. Short solo breaks from guitar, drum or piano also come to light here and there, while contributions from the Nashville String Machine - supporting the church's own 'ensemble' - are the only 'guest' musicians to feature on the entire album.

Recorded amidst 5,000 worshippers over one weekend (with studio overdubs/mixing added later), you'd expect the sound to be raucously loud and wild. On the contrary, while the 1 hour 10 minutes music that makes up this disc is at times free and celebratory, it is nevertheless refined, highly professional and thoroughly focused on the awesome God who wants to own Every Part of Me. You won't want to listen in if you're a half-hearted Christian - this recording is intended for those who are truly dedicated to the King on high. Magnificent stuff!

Nashville Vineyard are no strangers to the recording game - they've had two previous live worship releases; namely Let Your Healing Come from '99 and An Evening of Vineyard Worship a year later. Added to these of course, VCF Nashville worship leader Jan L'Ecuyer made contributions to the TtFH 43 Unspoken Truth disc, where her rendition of Scott Underwood's title track made compelling listening.

Now, while Vineyard recordings for much of the last decade have been an oscillating 'hit or miss' affair, Fall on Me thankfully lands well within the former category, carrying a strong selection of both vibrant and tender songs, and excellent musicianship throughout. Jan L'Ecuyer's contributions are most impressive, whether in intimate expressions as on 'Holy Father' and 'Faithful Friend' or on the decidedly rocky opening and closing cuts. Jennifer McClendon's strong vocals fit well on her own powerful 'Lost in Your love' rock-ballad, as well as on the country-rock delight of 'Your love pours over me', a track written by Mark Young, who's lead guitar riffs have powerful effect here and throughout the set. Tony Miller leads on three of his own competent songs, standouts being the 'Beautiful One' worship ballad and the searching 'Threshing floor' - not to be confused with independent album/song of same name by fellow Vineyard muso Mark Miller;

'God I stand before You / Broken and alone / I bring to You my whole heart / And lay it at your throne
Cries of desperation / Rise to You my Lord / Here at this threshing floor'.

In addition to these fresh encounters are two Vineyard 'oldies' - comparatively speaking - in the edgy forms of 'Fall on me' and The Well's 'Freedom reigns'. Stunning renditions both, but only in keeping with the entire album, which truly rocks! Strangely enough the intention is for this Vineyard project to be released in the springtime by Integrity Music - an intriguing collaboration for sure. You can wait 'til then if you wish, but I doubt if you'll regret stopping in on this sneak pre-release. It's a top notch work!
